We believe in the therapeutic benefits of animal companionship. Along with our residents, Steere House is the home to a variety of pets. These animals socialize with residents on all units, including our dementia care units, Safe Haven Advanced Care and Safe Haven Gardens. A variety of animals, including parakeets, a floppy-eared bunny and several regular canine visitors make up this wonderful collection of pets.
A while back, Steere House took in two kittens who have become the infamous team of “Oscar & Mya.” This playful duo lives on our dementia unit, Safe Haven Advanced Care. It is not uncommon to find them curled up on the desk or even napping with residents. While Mya is the livelier of the duo, Oscar is more laid back and has received an award from Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island for his work in “End of Life Care,” during which time he is very comforting to the residents and family members. Pets from home are welcome to visit provided that they have current shots, a bath and a good temperament.
