It is a process by which the nursing home organization and environment is transformed into a resident-centered place for enriched living. The ultimate goal is to create an environment whereby the resident is supported to make personal choices in all activities of life that enhance the quality and enjoyment of daily living. In essence, the current medical model with its many structured and scheduled activities is replaced with a menu of alternative choices from which a resident selects. Do you prefer breakfast at 6am, 9am or 10am? Do you like to bathe or shower everyday or would you prefer an evening whirlpool bath twice a week? Would you like a refrigerator in your room for snacks? How about a pet? These are a few examples of culture change choices. Not only are the residents positively impacted, the staff likewise will be involved with choices as to work assignments, work schedules and implementing quality of life activities for their residents. This change will take time to be fully implemented, but Steere House is well on its way.
